Michael de Podesta was a lecturer in Physics at Birkbeck College and University College London. He now works at the National Physical Laboratory. He runs a spectacular Physics course for the public, Protons for Breakfast. His talk describes a towering achievement in theoretical and practical physics, using measurement of the speed of sound at different temperatures to create the world's most accurate thermometer. And he demonstrates the idea live at TEDxTeddington with an appropriate extravagance of liquid nitrogen, hi-tech equipment, and rubber hose.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
