Bill Gates describes the Gates Foundation's new emphasis on the advancement of vaccinations to eradicate polio, which he predicts will energize the global health system. "In 1988 when the eradication campaign started, there were over 300,000 cases a year," says Gates. "We're down to having one percent as many cases as we had when we started, only a few thousand a year."

William (Bill) H. Gates is chairman of Microsoft Corporation, the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

Gates stepped down as chief executive officer of Microsoft in January 2000. He remained as chairman and chief software architect. In June 2006, Gates announced that he would be transitioning from full-time work at Microsoft to part-time work and full-time work at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Microsoft had revenues of US$39.79 billion for the fiscal year ending June 2005, and employs more than 61,000 people in 102 countries and regions.
