Speaker Bio: Dr. Jacob Soll is a historian whose research studies of early modern Europe are shedding new light on the origins of the modern state

Description of Talk: This talk explains the difficulties posed to accounting by politics at the earliest stages of capitalism. Even the Medici family, masters of banking, ended up cooking their books and losing their bank. In great part, this had to do with bad bookkeeping. Many of the pitfalls and challenges faced by the Medici remain with us today.

About TEDx
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
