As a young girl, Irma developed a passion for helping people who are limited in the English language, partly as the result of a chilling experience that changed her family's life forever. Today, Irma works as a multilingual medical interpreter in Greenville, SC. She is also a published author, wife, mother, grandmother, and a proud in-law of a brave Army soldier.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
