Lamar University History Professor Robert Robertson takes us to Forsythe Street, which is one of many streets that was mobbed during race riots in 1943. At that time, Beaumont was booming because of manufacturing business from World War II. There was a rumor that an African American man raped a white woman. Workers from the shipyard stormed the city, visiting city hall, the jail and many African American business districts. Two African Americans were killed, and one white person was killed. The riots lasted only a few days but left many African American businesses in shambles.
