Two weeks ago the world population hit the 7 billion mark. The increase in world population coupled with a general improvement in the standard of living is placing additional stress on the world's limited freshwater resources. Can conventional systems for producing safe potable water, and treating wastewater meet the water challenge in the 21st century? Will climate change and peak oil force a rethink on the way we use water? Will solutions developed in Malta, for Malta -- the country with the least amount of water per capita in the world -- provide the world with a template for sustainable water use? Marco Cremona presents his perspective to the 'water problem' and describe innovative solutions for a better world.

ABOUT MARCO
A water treatment engineer and hydrologist by profession, Marco Cremona has made a name for himself and his country as a staunch environmental activist and a researcher, as well as for being one of the first three Maltese to climb Mt. Everest. His water self-sufficient home in Mosta, Malta was recognised as the Best Environmental Project in Europe by France 5 Report Terre audiences, while his HOTER sewage-to-potable-water process put him in the finals of the prestigious CNBC/Allianz Good Entrepreneur competition for the Best Green Business Idea in Europe in 2009. Marco Cremona is currently in the running for the Stockholm Water Prize 2012, the equivalent of a Nobel Prize in the water sector. Marco's stints as an overseas volunteer have taken him to oversee projects in Kenya, post-tsunami Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Ethiopia among others. In March 2011, Marco took his water activism up a notch by setting up the Malta Water Association.

ABOUT TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
