We live in an age where free social media tools are available to anyone with access to the Internet, potentially empowering us as citizens to take greater control over our lives, and participate in networks and communities of practice without geographic and political boundaries. And yet, we keep applying old paradigms in our approach to disruptive technologies. There is a disconnect between the prevalent 20th century view of power and influence, and the quasi-utopian and revolutionary claims frequently attributed to social media. Alex takes us on a personal journey backed by research to debunk some myths and explore how we can re-think our relationship with social media as technologies of life.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a programme called TEDx. TEDx is a programme of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

Our event is called TEDxValletta, where x=independently organised TED event. At our TEDxValletta event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx programme, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organised.
