TAYO ARINOLA is a Washington DC native with Nigerian ancestry. Her BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology allowed her to explore basic science and clinical research, making medical discoveries at Pasteur Institute and Kimmel Cancer Center and inspiring her to become a physician. Her time abroad also grew her passion about Global Health, leading her to create Real Humanitarians, an organization that raises funds and awareness for underserved communities and forgotten causes. As president of Johns Hopkins University's Vision Xchange organization, she helped raise over $40,000 for various causes, leading Tayo to see an opportunity to make a greater impact on global issues outside of JHU and the Baltimore community. Real Humanitarians is helping her to make this vision a reality.
In her TEDxTalk, Tayo covers the various humanitarian needs of today's societies worldwide and the ways that she hopes to address them through her non-profit, REAL Humanitarians. She discusses how her desire for this organization came about after being stretched across numerous relief organizations with separate, non-overlapping focuses. Her vision for one non-profit with a vision for the whole world, something that could provide lasting benefits for many people and not temporary relief for one humanitarian need, manifested itself in REAL Humanitarians. Her talk challenges us to embrace this form of altruism and community service by not only supporting needs financially, but getting involved by becoming a part of various humanitarian efforts and making proposals for needs in your community that may go unnoticed by the media and society at large.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
