Why Art Matters. If innovation is the new currency, then the arts are essential to the creative environment that leads to innovation. The question is: who and how will the arts matter in our future?

Speaker Bio: Jeffrey Kimpton, president of Interlochen Center for the Arts, leads a distinguished portfolio of programs in arts education, public broadcasting and presentations. A lifelong arts educator and administration, Kimpton has brought leadership and innovation to positions in teaching and administration in K-12 and higher education, for- and non-profit arts organizations, private philanthropy and arts administration. Mr. Kimpton is a frequent presenter and consultant to arts and education organizations in the United States and Canada, and a passionate advocate for the role of the arts in our lives.

Interlochen, one of the nation's oldest arts communities (1927), and the second largest arts non-profit in Michigan, is comprised of flagship programs in arts education (Interlochen Arts Camp, Interlochen Arts Academy, Interlochen College), public broadcasting (Interlochen Public Radio network) and presentations (Interlochen Presents), impacting more than 4,000 students annually, millions of listeners, audience members and viewers through on-campus presentations, web and podcasting, streaming and video. Interlochen received the nation's highest recognition in the arts, the National Medal of Arts, in 2006 from President Bush.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxGrandRapids, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxGrandRapids event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
