Building Bridges, Bridging Cultures, Bringing Hope. This is the message that Harmon Parker is explaining the transformational power of a simple footbridge and how "Bridges" are a metaphor for many things. There are physical bridges, bridges of hope, bridges of peace -- in a way, we all are a bridge.

Harmon Parker is the founder and director of Bridging the Gap, a non-profit organization that builds pedestrian footbridges over perilous rivers for rural, marginalized communities in Kenya.

Harmon was first introduced to Africa in 1985 when he was invited to build a home for missionaries in Democratic Republic of Congo. Later, he participated in establishing and building a school in western Kenya. In 1990, he and his wife, Teri with their young son Josh, moved to Kenya and began what has become their life's work.

About TEDx.
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.

At TEDx events, a screening of TEDTalks videos -- or a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos -- sparks deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.
