In China, as in many parts of the world, there are intense ongoing debates about the best way to raise children to cope with the demands of living in an increasingly interconnected world. Tensions are sharpening between authoritarian, "mainstream," Asian parenting traditions that push children to excel academically and liberal, "alternative," Western approaches that focus on the balanced development of the whole child.
