Bas Haring is a Dutch philosopher. He studied Physics at Universiteit Utrecht and obtained a Ph.D. in Philosophy on artificial intelligence. Since 2006, he is working as a professor teaching 'public understanding of science' at Universiteit Leiden. He is also initiator of the master programme media technology. He also trains young scientists in making science more accessible.
Aside from his academical pursuits and his books, he also writes columns and presented a tv-program where he tried to find answers to common questions with a more philosophical undertone. It's his aim to give science and philosophy a meaning in everyday life, for everyday people. He gained a lot of recognition by writing several books that explain science very easily. His most well known and most rewarded book is "Cheese and the theory of evolution" -- about the meaning of evolution for philosophical and everyday questions. According to the Dutch national journal for biology teachers it is "the most brilliant text about evolution in the Dutch language". The book won the Golden Owl for children's literature, is published in more than ten countries; and sold over 60.000 copies in the Netherlands. In 2003, he wrote "Iron will" -- about the differences between cows, computers and human beings. In 2008, he wrote his third book "For a successful life" -- a plea for unsuccessful living.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
