Jill Denner visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss her book "Beyond Barbie and Mortal Kombat: New Perspectives on Gender and Gaming." This event took place on January 26, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series.

How does gender intersect with gaming? Can gaming lead to increased diversity in the technology workforce? Beyond Barbie and Mortal Kombat explores how gender intersects with todays gaming culture, from massively multiplayer online gaming to player-generated content, from the male-dominated gaming industry to the rise of serious and casual games. The author will also describe the Girl Game Company, an after school program that aims to increase Latina girls interest and capacity to pursue careers in computational fields by teaching them to design and program digital games.

Jill Denner is a Senior Research Associate at Education, Training, Research Associates, a non-profit organization in California. She earned her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology in 1995, and studies gender equity, with a focus on Latinas, in partnership with youth, schools, and community-based organizations. She is the founder of the Girl Game Company program for Latina girls, along with Steve Bean and Jacob Martinez.
