New York Times foreign correspondent Dexter Filkins argues that the U.S. "troop surge" in Iraq has, to date, largely been effective.


War correspondents often provide us with greater insight into the complex experiences behind the headlines of the daily news.

Reporting from Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and New York during 9/11, Dexter Filkins works on the ground to interview soldiers, insurgents, suicide bombers and civilian victims of conflict and gives us unique access to situations such as street-to-street combat and wartorn homes and villages.

Dexter Filkins, a foreign correspondent for The New York Times, has worked in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and, from 2003 to 2006, in Iraq. He has been a Pulitzer Prize finalist and has received a George Polk Award and two Overseas Press Club awards. In 2007–2008 he was a fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
