Alfred Berger studierte Architektur an der TU und der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien und diplomierte mit Auszeichnung 1989. Im selben Jahr gewann er den Wettbewerb für das Eissportzentrum in Wien Donaustadt, für das er mit dem Silbernen IAKS-Award ausgezeichnet wurde. Von 1994 bis 1998 unterrichtete er an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien als Assistent von Timo Penttilä und Massimiliano Fuksas. 1995 gründete Alfred Berger mit Tiina Parkkinen das Büro Berger+Parkkinen Architekten mit Sitz in Wien und Helsinki. Noch im Gründungsjahr gewannen sie den Wettbewerb für die Botschaften der fünf Nordischen Länder in Berlin. Der außergewöhnliche Botschaftskomplex entfachte ein enormes Medienecho und wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet (Du Pont Benedictus Award 2003, AIT Award 2004 und Finalist für den Mies van der Rohe Award). Es folgten zahlreiche nationale Wettbewerbserfolge sowie Einladungen zu großen internationalen Projekten.

ABOUT
The (re)conquest of public space. The continuous change of society throughout the 20iest century led to a deep change in social ties and networks. Traditional bounds changed or disappeared. Today plenty of time is used to build up and entertain social networks and private relations. Even though a lot of this happens in virtual space, there is an increasing demand for meeting in REAL live and in REAL space. In European cities, due to a lack of attractive public space in the new development areas, the historic city-centers are used as "meeting- and party-zones" for the whole surrounding territory. These obvious shortcomings of an important rate of the more recent buildings and developments cannot be compensated by the inherited richness of old centers!
The work of Alfred Berger with Tiina Parkkinen and their team since the founding of their architects practice deals with this highly demanding topic. Alfred will introduce some ideas, visions and projects about the (re)conquest of public space in architecture.
